Research Program
We welcome curious and motivated students with interests in music, technology, or creativity. Prior experience in coding or music is helpful but not required, but students who have successfully completed the MEC program will be preferred.

Our Research Assistantship is an opportunity for a select few students to participate in a year-long research program led by MIT professor Ian Hattwick. Over the course of the program students will get the opportunity to learn about the research process, the music technology research community, and engage with MIT students and faculty. Crucially, they will also contribute directly to an academic research project, leading to a paper submitted to major music technology conferences like NIME and ICLC, as well as other public presentations.
Program outline:
September-November 2026: Weekly online lab meetings. Schedule to be decided once applications have been completed.
December 2026: Online research intensive to complete our first round of research exploration.
Feburary-April 2027: Weekly online lab meetings. Schedule to be decided once applications have been completed.
July 2027: One-week in-person writing intensive held on-campus at MIT. Culminates in a joint research paper to be submitted to to conferences in music technology.
